Summer Print Magazine to arrive today!

Our website will follow, only a few more days.
This summer's issue is the best ever. We stride for improvement - and we're making leaps and bounds.

Unfortunately, advertising dollars are insufficient to sustain a winter print magazine -
so we'll give some basic information ONLINE ONLY for the unforseeable future. This valley has done a complete "flip flop" since the 1980's. It used to be that the ski area was busy in the winter and summertime was very quiet. Now, the winters are quiet - no revenues coming in to local shops - and summer time is extremely busy. My accountant suggested that I do a summer only issue for a while.
I'm not suggesting here that the actual skiing and the ski resort has "gone south". QUITE THE CONTRARY! This is a skiiers mountain. CBMR has put millions of dollars in improvements into the ski area. It is my understanding that new owner Diane Mueller has ideas brewing to make the area more family friendly as well. When we find out about any of this, we will post it.
The problem is getting here. Those flights in and out of Denver to Gunnison cancel all the time.
Your best bet is to fly American Airlines (fly into Dallas and make the connection - non stop to Gunnison) at this point. If more airlines fly into Gunnison, it will be much easier to get here.
It is a beautiful place, and there are still places to stay that are reasonably priced.
As well as plenty of luxury condos.
In the summertime, 80% of visitors DRIVE here. Interesting.

Also -we're reconsidering the You Tube option - we may some time in the future incorporate it into our website.

But it's almost Memorial Day Weekend - and we're ready to roll on the summer issue.
Check our website www.mountainkidsmagazine.com for the current summer issue...keep checking, we're working on it! You can also visit archived websites for ideas for hiking, lining up babysitters, etc.

Drive slower - save gas!

Spring Skiing/Moving Forward

The spring skiing is great here, of course, because we still have plenty of snow and the temperatures are warming up.
Mountain Kids Magazine is looking toward the future...
our summer issue,
and distribution next winter to Telluride and Aspen areas, and possibly Vail.
We're going to go regional and still keep local area specific information
for families. We'll also have general feature articles all families can use...as we have always done.
also, coming soon to our website,
a "You Tube" Channel.

SNOW GALORE!

I am abandoning my family, quitting my job and skiing every single day all day long.
This is absolsutely incredible! The snow is soft, rocks covered, and great skiing.
Never seen anything like it!
It's a joke that Mountain Kids Magazine isn't in the hands of every single family that visits Crested Butte. This area is NOT EASY to navigate - especially with kids, equipment, and all the walking necessary.
If you are coming, pick up a copy ASAP when you arrrive.
They're at the airport, the Chamber, the hotels all have them, the grocery store (Clark's), etc.
Get out here!!!! Don't miss this blessed snow year!
You'll be glad you did.
ESPECIALLY if you're a serious skier - this is a skiers mountain.....if you like Snowbird/Alta, you'll LOVE Crested Butte.

Deep and Steep!

We got more snow than anywhere else in the State of Colorado! I took the tape measure and stuck it straight down and measured 34 inches.
That means that all the rocks are covered and the skiing is going to be fabulous.
Talk about a dream fall & early winter! A nice warm, long fall, and then we get dumped on!
It'll be nice to ski the steeps for Christmas!
Let it snow*************

Warm Temperatures

This has got to be one of the longest autumns ever! We've had temperatures in the high 40's, low 50's -- and frankly we're loving it. It's a bonus to have early skiing, if we get lots of snow.
It's also a bonus to have an extended fall - and a shorter winter! The snow will come. It always does. The ski area does have a run or two open from snowmaking. A (harmless) bacteria is added to the water that makes it freeze at higher temperatures. They make big piles of "snow" and then they flatten it out with their grooming equipment for skiing.

Mountain Kids Magazine has deep roots in Crested Butte and Gunnison. The publisher (me) is a Western State College graduate and has lived in Gunnison County for nearly 25 years. I used to be a flight attendant and commuted to Denver (and beyond) from Crested Butte. Of course, this was before kids. Once the kids came, no more flight attendant, but the travel bug is alive and well.
After traveling with my kids, I was tired of searching high and low to try to find out what is going on for kids in different areas. Gunnison County is remote, sparsely populated, and there are absolutely no conveniences here. Which makes it particularly difficult for families who travel here from cities to navigate and have a stress free vacation. For example, in the city, it seems like there are 24 hour pharmacies all over the place. In Gunnison, there are only 2 pharmacies and they have limited hours. Grocery shopping? Not that easy here.
On the other hand, if it were THAT horrible here, I would have left a long time ago.
It's an awesome place to raise kids - great school, low crime, beautiful surroundings, in touch with nature and the earth....
